Curiosamente, l\u2019idea del ponte nacque da una tragedia personale: quando suo padre mor\u00ec, il maltempo imped\u00ec a Sz\u00e9chenyi di attraversare il Danubio per partecipare al funerale. Questo evento doloroso rivel\u00f2 l\u2019urgenza di un ponte permanente in grado di resistere alle difficolt\u00e0 del fiume \u2014 una struttura capace di unire fisicamente e simbolicamente Buda e Pest.<\/p>\n<p>La visione di Sz\u00e9chenyi fu realizzata dall\u2019ingegnere britannico William Tierney Clark, autore del progetto, e da Adam Clark (nessuna parentela), che ne supervision\u00f2 la costruzione. La leggenda racconta che lo scultore si sarebbe suicidato nel Danubio quando un bambino gli fece notare che i leoni non avevano la lingua \u2014 ma questa \u00e8 solo una bella storia: le lingue ci sono, semplicemente non si vedono frontalmente!<\/p>\n<p>\u2694\ufe0f Guerra, distruzione e rinascita<br \/>\nLa storia del ponte \u00e8 strettamente legata alle lotte per la libert\u00e0 dell\u2019Ungheria. Alla sua inaugurazione nel 1849, la cerimonia fu oscurata da un\u2019atmosfera tragica: a presiederla fu il generale austriaco Haynau, tristemente noto per aver giustiziato i 13 Martiri di Arad. Inoltre, Sz\u00e9chenyi non vi partecip\u00f2 poich\u00e9, dopo la rivoluzione, aveva avuto un grave crollo nervoso.<\/p>\n<p>Il momento pi\u00f9 buio arriv\u00f2 durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, quando le truppe tedesche in ritirata fecero esplodere il ponte, lasciando intatti solo i piloni in pietra.
