🗺️ The Fascinating History of the Citadella
The name “Citadella” comes from the Italian word meaning “fortress”, and it has served as a military stronghold throughout Hungary’s turbulent history. The story of the Citadella dates back to the Turkish occupation, when a palisade castle was built on Gellért Hill for defensive purposes. However, the fortress we see today was constructed much later, during a period of political unrest.
In 1813, under the suggestion of Palatine Joseph, the old castle was replaced by the Gellért Hill University Observatory. This observatory played a key role in scientific research but was severely damaged during the 1848–49 War of Independence.
Following Hungary’s defeat, during the oppressive Bach era, the Austrian Empire sought to maintain control over the Hungarian population. The Vienna War Council, led by the infamous General Haynau, ordered the construction of a new fortress—thus, the Citadella was born in 1850, designed by Austrian military engineer Emmanuel Zitta.
With 60 cannons pointed directly at the city, the Citadella became a dreaded symbol of tyranny and absolutism for Hungarians. It wasn’t until 1899 that the Austrian military finally withdrew from the fortress, marking the end of an era.

During World War II, it was repurposed as an anti-aircraft bunker, protecting Budapest from aerial attacks.
